What is recycling for us?
Five people from two different countries are in one group to get to know what we can do for our planet today.Alona, Yana and Viktoria are from Ukraine, Kyiv. They study English and German, but they are very in environmental protection. Marcelo and Victor are from Spain, Valencia. They both study chemistry and want to learn more about recycling.
We all know that RECYCLING is the process of converting waste into new, useful products. Waste materials that can be recycled include plastic bottles, paper, cardboard, food and drink cans, trays, tabs, food and beverages cartons, and aluminum foils. Although recycling has been going on for the past few years, recycling efforts need to be increased considering the amount of waste disposed of every day.
But do we recycle in Ukraine? In 9 Ukrainian cities waste sorting lines are in operation, and in 19 more towns such facilities are under construction. Aside from 3 percent of household waste separately collected and recycled, 4 percent went to the two incineration plants in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk. Meanwhile, only one of former four incineration plants – located in Kyiv – is operational; its service life of 25 years is over, the equipment out of date and the boiler is not fully loaded because of high costs compared to disposal.
We are under development. The problem of waste and its recycling is only gaining popularity in Ukraine.
Only now the issues of transition to solar energy are raised, only now the youth has started to consciously make their eco choices and only now have we started thinking about the environment together, when we have already seen the significant consequences of our disrespectful behavior to nature. This year these consequences were seen like never before.
Although we do not have any rules for recycling garbage, we do not have containers for different types of garbage everywhere, and we cannot recycle everything. But each one of us can save water during everyday deals, buy those products where the percentage of plastic is the smallest, avoid polyethylene shops and consciously treat the place where we live. Developing the habit of buying only what you need and reusing products rather than purchasing news one saves a lot on your budget.
Most people have already made up their minds that one person cannot make any difference in regard to recycling waste. That thinking might apply in other fields...
In recycling, an individual can make a big difference.
To be continued...
